Terms of use

Who runs SpeakEasy

SpeakEasy, the website speakeasy.wiki and the SpeakEasy app, is made by eyay studio in the Netherlands. These terms are the agreement between you and eyay studio when you use it. Questions go to hello@eyay.studio.

Who can use it

Reading, searching and learning are open to everyone. An account is for people aged 16 and over; when you sign in, you confirm that you are.

What you contribute

  • Send only your own words, or text you are allowed to share. Don’t copy from dictionaries, websites, books or song lyrics; a short reference to a source is fine. Text an AI wrote is not a source.

  • You keep your copyright, and you license what you write to everyone under CC BY-SA 4.0: anyone may share and adapt it, also commercially, if they credit it and share their version under the same licence.

  • The credit is what the word page shows: the name you chose for that contribution, or none, together with SpeakEasy and a link to the page.

  • Sending something means it may be published after review, also in edited form. When the editors rewrite your text, the page says so. You are responsible for what you send.

What is not allowed

Not in proposals, examples, posts, names or voice notes:

  • Hate, or attacks on people for who they are.

  • Harassment, threats or bullying.

  • Doxxing: someone’s address, phone number or other ways to find them.

  • Personal data of other people, such as names or recognisable situations in examples. Examples may be invented.

  • Sexual content involving minors.

  • Spam, advertising or automated posting.

  • Text copied from someone else.

A dictionary of slang describes rude and offensive words too. Describing a word is fine; using it against someone is not.

Moderation

Reviewers and stewards check what is sent in. They can edit, send back or refuse a proposal, and stewards can hide or remove published text and posts and limit an account, when something breaks these terms or the law, or would make the dictionary wrong. They give a reason.

Disagree with a decision on your proposal? You can appeal once per decision, in the app where you see it. For anything else, such as a published text about you, write to hello@eyay.studio.

AI help

Some features use AI services: they can suggest a short meaning or an example while you write, match your own words to a meaning, and give stewards hints. People check every suggestion before the dictionary publishes it, and you decide what you send. AI can be wrong. Which services see what is on the privacy page.

Meanings come without guarantee

Meanings, examples and places are written by people who use the words and checked by volunteers. Slang changes fast and differs from place to place, so a meaning can be incomplete, outdated or wrong. Use it as a guide, not as advice. SpeakEasy is offered as it is, and features can change or stop.

Liability

As far as the law allows, eyay studio is not liable for damage from using SpeakEasy or from relying on what it says. This does not limit liability that the law does not let us limit, such as for intent or gross negligence, nor your rights as a consumer.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account yourself under You, with Delete account. Your private text goes. What was published stays on the website under CC BY-SA 4.0, no longer linked to you, because the licence cannot be taken back and copies may already exist. The name you chose as credit stays with it, unless you have it removed when you delete your account, or ask us. The details are on the privacy page, under How long.

Changes

These are terms terms-2026-10-v1. When they change, we update this page, its version and the date below. Each contribution keeps the version that was shown when it was sent.

Law

Dutch law applies to these terms, and a dispute goes to the competent court in the Netherlands. Wherever you live, you keep the protection your own country’s consumer law gives you, including going to a court where you live when that law allows it.
